The desire to “self-edit” scripture into something that agrees with one’s own sensibilities has been a well-worn path for centuries. There’s even a name for this: Gnosticism. Jesus came to bind up the broken-hearted and to set the captives free. He didn’t have to divide anyone — they had already divided themselves. And he loved people so much that he died so that they wouldn’t have to remain divided from God and themselves.
