I see your shadow

Already

The sun at your back

Long the shadow

strides ahead

I see you

four-quartered

gaze-fixed

your right hand dark

and the shadow

imperceptibly

marks the passing

so already it is past

I see you

stretch your foot

and the shadow

bending

as the sun strikes

its fist

as you rise

meeting the horizon

foreshortening shade

the sun at your shoulder

and again you stretch

you step

High.

And crept-in upon your foot

the shadow

And I see you

strong

tall

masterly, all-masterly

and you unblink

making your path

As high

burning sun

sears

I see you

trip on your shadow

trailing lefthanded

as the sun strikes your cheek

You turn

and your eyes fall

and your step

your step

and your back

weary

and the sun

will not forgive

So here you are

four-quartered and spent

and the sun-rust

warms the last embers

of your face

as the shadow

falls behind

longing.

I have seen you

better than you have seen yourself.

And your shadow

is nothing but rest.
