What Score Do You Need to Pass the ASVAB?
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a test used by the United States military to assess the aptitude and suitability of individuals for various military careers. The ASVAB does not have a specific passing score. Instead, each branch of the military sets its own minimum score requirements for enlistment or specific military occupational specialties (MOS).
The ASVAB consists of multiple subtests, each measuring different abilities such as arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, mechanical comprehension, and more. The scores on these subtests are used to calculate various composite scores, including the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score is the most commonly referenced score and is used to determine basic eligibility for military service.
The AFQT score ranges from 1 to 99 and is calculated based on four of the ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Word Knowledge. The AFQT score is a percentile score, meaning it compares an individual’s performance against a reference group. For example, an AFQT score of 70 means the test-taker performed as well as or better than 70% of the reference group.
The minimum AFQT score required to enlist in the military varies depending on the branch. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the minimum AFQT scores were as follows:
Army: The minimum AFQT score requirement is usually around 31, but it can vary depending on the needs of the Army.
Navy: The minimum AFQT score requirement is currently 35.
Air Force: The minimum AFQT score requirement is currently 36.
Marines: The minimum AFQT score requirement is typically around 32, but it can vary.
Coast Guard: The minimum AFQT score requirement is currently 40.
