Is Technology destroying the way we communicate?
Technology is evolving rapidly, faster than most of us can keep up. It has brought people from different parts of the world closer through digital and social communication. But sadly the ones who are physically closer are now further away. When we open up our computers its the door to the outside world that we shut.
The issue with having so much power at our fingertips is communication through human interaction is being destroyed, not by older generations but the children who are so called the “digital natives”. Did you know the average person spends 4 years looking down at his mobile? (Prince ea) Thats just phones alone. We lock ourselves away talking to “friends” on social media instead of spending time with people who truely love us; our families. Being able to hide away from the world has brought out what we call the “keyboard warrior” a person who hides behind his screen and emotionally and physiologically destroys someone through cyber bullying.
Privacy is massive issue now as peoples lives are basically recorded and put out there for the public to see “digital tattoo” hackers, scammers and identity thieves are out there harming the public through the cyber world.
The use of acronyms and abbreviations have dramatically increased since social media has arisen. I was walking past students one day and instead of laughing they were saying the abbreviation “LOL” “ROFL”. Communication through social media is even starting to impact the english language in every day life.
Messages do not show emotion and can come across the wrongly in a way that wasn’t intended. Heres an example: (warning censored contains profanity)
Although there are so many negative points about the use of digital communications there are many positive points. It has allowed us to bring the world closer. You can get in contact with anyone you wish around the world with a click of a button. You can research anything you wish and find information on a subject almost instantly. Met someone you wish you kept in contact with? well thats ok because most of the community have some form of social media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. With just a search of their name you can keep get in contact with them.
To sum it all up communication digitally has changed our planet and will continue to evolve the way communicate with one another. We rely on technology to get socially involved and block out the outside world. Remember “with great power comes great responsibility” — uncle ben, spider man
