So Far, AI Has Been A Big Letdown

2023 was supposed to be the Year of AI.

The big breakthrough. The year when programs like ChatGPT and OpenAI changed the world. Artificial intelligence for personal users would revolutionize everything- or so we were told.

Sorry, folks. It just didn’t happen.

I haven’t noticed a bit of difference with the spread of AI (or artificial intelligence, in case you have been on Elon Musk’s Mars colony for the last year). AI has not improved our daily lives. To the contrary, AI has brought an element to our interactions that is shallow, phony, and cheap.

I hate to be the one to pierce the AI bubble. I take no joy in raining on the AI parade. But the fact is that not much has changed with the spread of AI.

The AI emperor has no clothes.

AI is guilty of not living up to expectations. And it is guilty on two counts: what it has done, and what it has failed to do.

Let’s start with what AI hasn’t done.

We were told that AI would create remarkable breakthroughs. Its ability to synthesize large bodies of data would result in tremendous discoveries in the fields of science, economics, and social services. New advances would occur with great rapidity, propelled by the limitless potential of AI.
