She was nervous but she told you. Kudos to you Shannon; may you always be the kind of mother she can come to you with anything.

As a black mother I can tell you we don’t have all the answers either; my heart broke too when my eldest daughter (now 33) told me age 4 that she didn’t like her skin colour. Children are so honest, that is to be celebrated. It took many, many conversations, many actions including taking her to live abroad and to visit countries that are mainly black. Today she loves herself, she loves her skin and she understands that racism is not her fault.
