Data Flow and Control of the Well

The down-hole equipment (valves and sensors, and gauges) are electrically connected to the control panel at the well surface through a cable, connectors and terminations. The cable goes up the hole to the panel. Image 1 shows the configuration which is used to convey the sensor data and control valve
position for well segments equipped with ICVs. The sensor data consists of temperature and pressure down the well. The valve position sensor data are transferred in real time. A receive-transmit unit (RTU) inside the control panel passes the data to a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. Using a flow rate-based model, the production engineers can know which segment is flowing oil, gas, or water. Based on this, they can decide which valves need to be adjusted, and send down a control signal to adjust the choke size down-hole.
