The US space agency establishes a milestone by appointing an AI expert to lead its technological strategy.

NASA has taken a historic step by appointing David Salvagnini as its first Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI), marking a milestone in his technological career.

This appointment responds to US President Joe Biden’s executive order urging all federal agencies to prioritize the development and safe use of AI.

In a statement issued today, the US space agency explained that this decision aligns with its strategic vision and its commitment to leading the way in the use of AI for the benefit of humanity.

For decades, NASA has been using a variety of AI tools to support its missions and research projects, as well as to analyze data and develop autonomous systems.

David Salvagnini, who joined NASA in 2023 as Chief Data Officer, will now assume the role of Chief AI Officer.

With more than 20 years of technology leadership experience, including more than two decades of service in the U.S. Air Force, Salvagnini is well positioned to lead NASA’s efforts in this emerging field.

“It is important that we remain at the forefront of the advancement and responsible use of AI,” NASA stated in its statement.

Additionally, the agency will continue to collaborate closely with other government agencies, experts, industry partners, and academic institutions to maximize the potential of AI in its goals and missions.

This appointment also marks the end of the period in which Kate Calvin, NASA’s chief scientist and senior climate advisor, served as acting head of AI.
