Regarding Mt. 9:16-18 (unshrunk cloth & wineskins) - My initial thinking (provoked by your writing and trying to imagine it) is that maybe cloth from an old garment is torn in strips to provide a garment (looking somewhat like that of a sumo wrestler, though much thinner) to hold a pad in place (with a cloth belt above the waist - could they trust some sticky substance on the edges of the pad?). If unshrunk cloth was used, and it got wet, it might cause problems, including constriction or breaking, and thus falling and causing embarrassment. The idea with the wineskins would be to simply not try to reuse a pad - use a new one for sanitary reasons. Discard them just like used wineskins.
