2017 National People’s Congress

The annual meeting of China’s highest legislature, the National People’s Congress, opened this weekend at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The 5th session of the 12th NPC is expected to be focused primarily on the country’s economy, as the government reported the lowest annual GDP growth in nearly three decades — though the 6,7% growth is in agreement with last year’s expectations. Other topics thought to be discussed are the country’s military spending, Hong Kong election, as well as the US presidential election. As The Telegraph suggests, the meeting is an opportunity for high-ranking officials to make their bids for further promotion. For China’s top-level politics, therefore, the NPC bears very high importance. This set of pictures depicts the scenes inside the Great Hall of the People and around Tiananmen Square. (26 pictures)
