Picture Editing Scrapbook

Hi,

This Medium feed is a side project of mine which I’d like to use as a platform to explore and practice picture editing and picture sequencing.

I’ve started my career with an aspiration to become a photographer and I’d like to believe I’m on a good trajectory in that respect. I spent three years studying Photojournalism & Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, and in late-2016, I’ve had a chance to attend one of the finest photojournalistic workshops in the world, the Eddie Adams Workshop.

This allowed me to meet and talk to some of the brightest and most influential people in the photographic industry — other fellow photographers, picture editors, art directors, publishers and others. And I’ve come to realise that while photographers certainly enjoy the most high-powered part of the job of visual reporting, there’s a lot more people in the process whose work is no less dynamic and just as difficult. The unsung heroes, if you will.
 
People who browse through tens of thousands of images every week and decide what is and what is not worth showing the readers and viewers. And by extension, decide how the depicted events, communities, or sentiments are represented and thus perceived by everyone outside of the visual reporting apparatus.
 
Yes, they’re the picture editors. Their role fascinates me and I’d love to try and figure out the thought process of representing through picture selection. I’ve learned how to represent through picture creation, and now I feel it’s time to see what other photographers are doing, and make sense of that.

And until I figure out a better to do that, this is going to be my scrap book. The way it’s going to work is I’m going to be embedding images from Getty Images editorial picture feed and each post is going to be about a particular event. I’m open to constructive criticism, I’d love to hear what you think about this idea, and I’m happy for you to just tune in and see some extraordinary pictures.
