France has no culture of creating an exceptional experience for the many, because our tradition consists in creating that exceptional experience only for the few. This approach is dangerous in the digital economy, because it’s impossible to generate increasing returns if you choose to remain on a niche market and serve only the richest customers.
As mentioned above, France trains engineers whose skills are critical at the later stages of a tech company’s history. For that reason, large US tech companies are eager to employ those engineers, either by making them move to the US, or by opening offshore R&D centres here in France. But they’re not that useful at the startup stage.
