Through her art, Mom helped me understand that our greatest achievement in life comes from using our passion to connect with people in a way that makes them feel loved and valued. It’s the idea that, in creating and sharing what we love, we are growing and making a contribution. And there can be no greater achievement in life than that!

Mom helped people in pain with a series of images she created for her journey through fibromyalgia called, “Exile and Healing.” Her artistic interpretation of the “Stations of the Cross” was hung in churches during the Lenten season and helped people connect with the Spirit on a deeper level. She organized adult coloring book classes to introduce people to meditation. And these are just three examples in a life filled with them.

I’m a volunteer pilot for Pilots ‘n Paws, an organization of volunteer pilots who fly dogs rescued from high kill shelters to the new forever homes. And recently I signed up to fly volunteer missions for Angel Flight, an organization of volunteer pilots who fly people in need of medical treatment. And I get to do it all while pursuing my passion for flying.

Through her example, Mom showed me that what we love can be a transformative experience for other people. And it’s no coincidence that one of her favorite quotes comes from Rumi:

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”

Our passions can have a greater meaning than the solitary pursuit of that which makes our Soul sing. We can use them to form a communion of Souls doing what they love. And in doing so, we can change the world.
