Whilst the article offers an extremely comprehensive & rigourous analysis, I would like to venture the suggestion that in conclusion it rather missses the point. Namely that, whatever the cost & whatever the mission/s shortfall, the real utitilty of the F-35 program is that of a test-bed. An extremely expensive one at that, but ultimately this plane is the precursor to a fully automated design. The technologies being developed, trialled & refined will ultimately be those that function in a non-human vehicle, & therefore the all to obvious flawas in this model are but a stepping stone to full, autonomous capability. Thus, the more prescient question I would contend, is whether the US is willing to share this technology with it’s partners & fellow share-holders. That I seriously doubt.
