(On gossip)

self-reflections in the holy month of Ramadan

It came to me as a whisper,

confided to me as a warning:

“Don’t tell this to anyone”

like a secret, not so secret

revealing an evil truth about her

the truth was

evil coursed through my veins

so eager to hear such unrighteous gospel.

Now wishing I had closed my ears,

and wishing more that

I had drowned out the sounds of gossip with the murmur of my prophet’s plea:

“Do you know what is meant by backbiting? To say something about your brother which he dislikes because if such defects you say about him are true, then you have backbitten him, and if they are untrue, then you can committed slander against him.”

A backbiter is not me.

A slanderer is not someone I will be.

To all my victims, I am sorry.
