(On regret)

self-reflections in the holy month of Ramadan

The $10 bill in my wallet

burned

just as the look the man

standing on the highway pass

with sweat on his brow and sadness in his eyes

gave me

burned in my mind

unable to be forgotten

unable to be answered.

i saw him, but i had averted my eyes

the red light on the verge of changing

the wallet too far out of my reach

and i

too ashamed to even pay him in a smile.

Oh what that $10 could have done for his empty stomach.

Oh what that smile could have done to uplift his mood.

Oh what that simple act of charity could have done for me on the day of judgement.

Oh Allah, let me not miss any more opportunities to give in charity this blessed Ramadan.

Ameen.
