When you eat or drink something, you want it to be in perfect or the best condition possible. If something spoils it, or taints it, you would no longer want to have it, such as tainted water.

Green water coming out of the tap wouldn’t be very appealing!

☆ MEANING: to spoil, harm, damage, contaminate, etc.

The same goes for people. Most want to have an unblemished image, reputation, etc. It can be difficult for those in the public eye, such as politicians, to survive, if their reputation is ruined or tainted by some type of scandal.

Tarnish” is also used to refer to ruining someone’s image or reputation.

He had a dazzling career, before it was tarnished by a drugs scandal.

“Taint” is the verb and noun form.
