We consulted Forbes, who recently reported on the most expensive and extravagant weddings of all time, from celebrities to business billionaires and socialites.

While a study by The Knot in 2006 showed that the average cost of a wedding is now $35,329 (£28,206), the couples on the Forbes list dished out millions for their celebrations.

US President Donald Trump pulled out all the stops for his Palm Beach wedding to the Slovenian model Melania Knauss in January 2005 — a ceremony that cost $1 million(£80,170).

She wore a couture gown designed by Christian Dior’s John Galliano, which reportedly cost over $100,000 (£81,000), took 1,000 hours to make, and featured hand-stitched crystal rhinestones and pearls.

A traditional ceremony was held at the Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church, but the reception was at Trump’s own Mar-a-Lago oceanfront estate in a ballroom “said to be modeled after Versailles.”

Billy Joel performed, and the menu included caviar, lobster, and truffles. Hillary and Bill Clinton were guests.

Delphine Arnault and Alessandro Vallarino Gancia — £5.6 million

Delphine Arnault, heiress to the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) empire, married Alessandro Vallarino Gancia, heir to a dynasty of Italian winemakers, in a ceremony in south-western France in September 2005. However, the couple divorced in 2010.

Arnault, the daughter of LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, wore a couture gown designed by John Galliano for the House of Dior. They exchanged vows at the Roman Catholic Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bazas, a French national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.

The reception was held at the Château d’Yquem vineyard in Bordeaux, which was filled with 5,000 thousand white roses. The ceremony reportedly cost $7 million (£5.6 million).

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West — £9.6 million

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian married hip hop artist Kanye West in May 2014 at the 16th-century Forte di Belvedere in Florence.

The ceremony saw Andrea Bocelli sing as she walked down the aisle. John Legend performed the first dance song at their reception.

The festivities took place all over the map. A rehearsal dinner took place in the Hall of Mirrors at the Chateau de Versailles, and featured a performance from Lana Del Rey.

Kardashian and West both wore oufits designed by Riccardo Tisci — Kim’s was a Givenchy Haute Couture lace gown.

The wedding reportedly cost $12 million (£9.6 million).
