I think it was early November 2017; a few months after we started building the earliest versions of Marlow.
I was sitting at the desk in my 600-square-foot-one-bedroom-but-really-a-suped-up-studio-apartment in San Francisco trying to find new ways to add value for our members.
We were a much smaller team at the time but our creativity and willingness to try new ideas was as strong as it is today.
The main requirements for trying a new experiment at Marlow is that you must have a clear hypothesis and some amount of evidence to back up our hypothesis before we threw too many…
How the hell did Theranos hustle so many ‘smart’ people? People don’t want to test their assumptions when the alternative is much more exciting.
I’ve been following Elizabeth Holmes since she announced her (up-til-then)stealth startup, Theranos. She and her team had been growing the business for roughly a decade and were finally ready to take it to the next level.
The tech world turned her into a hero and tried to make her the “Queen of Female Founders”. This was right at the moment when plenty of stats were coming through about female founders being underfunded and undersupported.
To ensure your organization will succeed in the coming years, empower your team members to take the lead on their own development. It’s the only scalable effort that leads to engagement, performance, and retention.
My grandfather used to walk to school with bricks on his feet (uphill both ways).Yours too, huh?
Back in the good old days...Before television, social media, and rock music ruined everything.
It was also before all of the "snowflakes" arrived. You know, millennials. The ones who apparently are ruining the world as we know it.
The ones who demand a job that actually aligns with…
In December 2017, we officially enabled companies to roll Marlow out to their team members. This was not a decision we took lightly.
Up until that point, we had decided to offer Marlow’s coaching and professional development resources to individuals, rather than their companies — putting the power in the hands of the person we believed was best positioned to impact change in their trajectory.
There were many reasons for this, but the core reason was that, at the end of the day, individuals are responsible for the direction of their careers. …
A friend recently came to me to review their resume. This particular individual has an impressive background:
But their resume told me none of this.
I’m what some people might consider to be a “doer”. Moving fast is in my blood. I like to come up with ideas fast, quickly eliminate the silly ones, and take action on the good ones. I get stuff done.
Unless I’m blocked…
There have been many times in my life when I have stood completely frozen, making absolutely no progress — even though I genuinely wanted to.
Sometimes it’s decision fatigue. Those are the moments when I had too many options and just simply didn’t know which one to choose.
Other times it was simply having no direction. If…

When your work aligns with your values, it’s easier to stay motivated and engaged. Understanding these values is the first step in designing a career path that works for you. Clear values make it easier to shape your work environment, clarify expectations with coworkers, set boundaries.
When it comes to your career, what do you want? It’s a seemingly simple question but many people struggle to find a clear answer.
Values are what you care about. Knowing what you care about will help you make more strategic career-related decisions.

Woah. Just…woah. 2018 was one of those years that showed up without warning, threw a big party, and disappeared in a flash. Like a beach vacation, it flew past us — charming, magical, and full of big lessons.
Before we even had a chance to catch our breath and recognize what had happened, it was just gone.
Like a beach vacation, we ended the year feeling rejuvenated and truly energized.
However, unlike a beach vacation that comes to an end, we’ve been able to extend the magic from 2018 right into the new year.
My team would probably laugh me…
Hundreds of people applied. This should have been a recruiter’s dream. In theory, inbound applications make the recruitment process significantly easier. Unfortunately, most of these candidates who took the time to submit their application, didn’t actually slow down long enough to write a cover letter .
Some people will tell you that the cover letter is dead. They’re wrong.
If you want to stand out in a crowded platform of applicants, I strongly urge you to resuscitate this document and use it to your advantage. You’ll thank me later.
I wasn’t even supposed to be recruiting. Massdrop had just raised…
