Timing Your Advancement At Work
--
Did you know that there’s an ideal time to ask for an advancement at work?
It’s true! Most women that want to ask for a promotion or a raise don’t realize how crucial timing can be. If you’re ready to advance your career, make sure you think strategically and show up prepared!
Timing Your Advancement At Work
So when is the best time to ask for an advancement at work?
In short: the first Monday in January.
I bet you didn’t expect it to be that easy, did you? Let me tell you why. At the beginning of the year, companies are typically setting their budgets and often tend to be in a place where they will try new things. If your company isn’t in turmoil, this is usually a good time to make the ask. Be sure to check in with HR to see when the budget for the business is set to make sure. Most of the time, this is when the company will be allocating funds that they will be spending throughout the year, and that has the potential to include your raise!
The likelihood of receiving a raise or a promotion could also depend on how long you’ve been with your company. If it’s been at least twelve months, it’s a great time to ask. But it never hurts to time the ask after a big win!
Which brings me to my next point:
What Will You Bring To The Table?
When you are ready to ask for an advancement at work, how are you going to show up? It’s important to communicate your value and accomplishments to the company if you’re going to ask them to invest in you. Even if you’re not ready to ask for a raise or a promotion right now, you can start documenting your accomplishments within your role so that when the time is right, you have it. Start tracking your success!
Debunking a Myth: What If The Company Isn’t Doing Well?
I’ve seen a lot of people take this as advice: “If the company isn’t doing well, you shouldn’t ask for more within your position.” In my opinion, that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re bringing value back to your organization, you can absolutely ask for a promotion or a raise! In fact, this might be a crucial time for the company to have you around and notice your value. They want you to remain on the team!
If you’re ready for advancement at work, start documenting your accomplishments and get ready for January. I hope the new year brings you all of the advancement that you’re hoping for!
