I’m 55 years old and wasn’t diagnosed with anxiety and depression until I was 26. Your comments about these issues developing in adolescence really resonated with me. I remember all those feelings of not measuring up and the subsequent shame. I was raised by my grandparents and they were ill-equipped to handle me. Of course, in the 70’s and 80’s, no one talked about anxiety and depression. I am better at coping now but still feel like that awkward, weird kid I was back then. Thank you for this essay, it’s important for people to understand the source of their pain as a first step towards healing.
