Amazeballz Stories Day 27/100: How to screw up a story

The shortest distance between two people is a story.

Stories allow us to connect.

We connect to new people and to new ideas. We connect with people we know (and with people we don’t know) through stories.

We tell stories all the time, yet we are not connecting very well.

Is story is such a great tool - why isn’t it working?

Your stories are not giving you all the connection you are looking for because your stories suck.

Actually, your STORIES are undoubtedly great. Your capacity to tell them is what sucks. You screw up your stories.

How to screw up your story.

  1. Don’t know how to start
  2. Too many details
  3. Wrong details
  4. Too few details
  5. Don’t know when to end
  6. Don’t know HOW to end

Every story has distinct parts and when one of those parts is missing or unclear, then the story is weakened.

Imagine an incomplete little story like a puppy in a cage. Still cute to look at but if only you could take it out of the cage and play hold it and pet it! That is what connection looks like.

If you are missing (or sloppy) on two or three parts of your story, the whole story decays. Now you just have a photo of a puppy and it is asleep and doing nothing. Connect is nearly nil.

We cannot connect with incomplete stories. The world needs your stories to wake up and come alive so we can know you and understand what you are showing us.

Learn storytelling and connect to more people.
