I am with you on most of this. I am a little more cynical, though, about this so-called tradition of virtuous leaders and constructive ideas. I think we have to be careful about idealizing past political leaders, both based on their characters and on some of the ideas that continued oppression. That being said, we do need a higher standard of accountability and ways to stop rewarding the mess of an election process we now have.
