The Power of Prayer

Prayer is talking to God.

It isn’t reserved for the righteous alone. It’s free of charge and available to everyone.

Why is communicating with God on a daily basis important?

During our time in communication with God is when we get to firstly thank him for the blessings in our lives, one of which is the gift of life. We get to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness. We tell God about our problems, and our worries and we put in our requests. It’s also when God speaks to us in the spirit and lets us know his will for us. Prayer helps us build a rapport with God.

Humans are spirits having a physical experience. We are taught to take care of our bodies but we aren’t taught to take care of our spirit. We know who to call when our bodies are malnourished but who do we call when it’s our spirit?

Everything that manifests in the physical realm first takes form in the spiritual realm. Prayer is the only weapon that works in the spiritual realm. We won’t have control over every aspect of our lives but there are certain situations that can be avoided or manifested in the physical by praying.

The most important part of a believer’s work with God is praying. A common mistake believers make is waiting till they find themselves in hard situations before praying. When you understand what prayer does in the spirit realm you won’t start your day without it. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16).

When you pray it’s important to focus on the quality of the prayer. Your prayer should be genuine and should come from your heart. God sees your heart, and he sees your deeds. No point pretending you are someone you are not. It’s your alone time with your maker. Be honest and open and let him know how you truly feel.

The biggest mistake we can make is thinking we aren’t good enough to pray to God. Praying isn’t just for our pastors, mothers and grandmothers. We must build the practice of covering ourselves with prayer on a daily basis regardless of our lifestyle. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

A good practice for beginners is to pray every morning when you wake and at night before you sleep. Advance prayer warriors understand that we pray when we are led by the spirit to do so. Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). You could be stuck in traffic and you are led by the spirit to say a quick prayer, go ahead and do it. A stranger walks past and you are led to say a prayer for them, do it.

If you don’t know how to pray, a simple prayer for beginners is the Lord’s prayer which was taught by Yeshua. It goes like this:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen.
