Re the 1913 high temperature record set in Death Valley and mentioned by a commenter here —it seems it is not clear if that record is valid. See:

Reasons to question the accuracy of the record, as reported in article at above link are:

  1. No evidence that there was an exceptional heat wave occurring in the Southwest in July 1913
  2. Nearby areas did not register unusually high temps consistent with the observation of 134-degree record
  3. The high-temperature record was reported by an inexperienced observer
