Eating For Your Type

Have you ever taken your blood type in to consideration when choosing something to eat? Have you ever thought about your blood type at all? Dr. Peter D’Adamo thinks we should be taking it much more seriously, and has science to back it up.

D’Adamo, a naturopathic physician, is a world-expert in blood groups. According to his website, and his research, the key to understanding why some people are plagued by chronic illness and weigh issues while others thrive, is all in our blood type. Different blood types can determines someone’s susceptibility to certain diseases, reactions to stress, the health of the gut bacteria, and how your body reacts to food.

In his book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, Dr. D’Adamo explains the ideal diet for each of the 4 basic blood groups, A, B, O, and AB. To make things clear, D’Adamo wants to make clear that when talking about the blood type diet, “…we are not necessarily talking about a weight loss plan, that’s a side benefit to following this plan. We are actually discussing diet in the more traditional sense, meaning a way to eat.”

Type A

Type A’s thrive in a more structured environment while involved in a positive community. This blood type is more susceptible to cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and have a more sensitive immune system. A vegetarian diet is ideal, emphasizing fresh and organic ingredients. Type A’s having naturally higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and balancing stress levels is crucial. Dr. D’Adamo recommends limiting caffeine, sugar, and alcohol, as well as not skipping meals. This blood type also benefits from more calming exercises, like yoga, rather than excessive high intensity exercises.

Type B

Type B’s are the most adaptable and can thrive in a variety of conditions. But this can make it more easy for them to lose balance. They’re main issue is the high levels of cortisol release during stress, food sensitivities, and susceptibility to lingering viruses and slow growth. Eliminating wheat, corn, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds will keep blood sugar levels stable. Dr. D’Adamo also recommends avoiding chicken, “Chicken contains a Blood Type B agglutinating lectin in its muscle tissue. Although chicken is a lean meat, the issue is the power of an agglutinating lectin attacking your bloodstream and the potential for it to lead to strokes and immune disorders.” But it can easily be replaced with lamb, rabbit, or venison. D’Adamo recommends an exercise that challenges the body and the mind to promote balance. This could be hiking, golf, or biking.

Type O

Type O’s have higher levels of stomach acid, and may be predisposed to ulcers and thyroid disorders. They are particularly well suited to digest protein and fat very well. But because of this, simple carbs from grains can easily be turned into triglycerides and fat and the proteins in them can often lead to inflammation. An imbalance of stress can send a type O into a manic episode and eating the right diet can help manage stress levels. Dr. D’Adamo suggests eating lean meats and organic fruits and vegetables while avoiding wheat, dairy, caffeine, and alcohol. An aerobic activity 3–4 times a week will promote a better emotional response and support a regulated chemical transport system in their body.

Type AB

This type is, as you’ve probably guessed, a hybrid of type A and type B. They have the low stomach acid of a type A, but similar to type B they’ve adapted to eating meats. This mix causes the meats to be stored as fats. This type should avoid caffeine and alcohol when stressed, and Dr. D’Adamo recommends combining specific foods at meal time for better digestion. For example, avoid eating protein and starch together. Regular exercise should alternate days of high intensity with something more calming.
