Black Lives Matter, Police Terrorism in the U.S

Americans are in the streets protesting police terrorism while actively being gassed, beaten, and shot at. We must defund the police and revitalize our criminal justice system.

It comes as no surprise to black America whenever there are reports of a black man or a woman brutally murdered from the organized gang that everyone calls “police”. I have seen video after video of police brutally assaulting peaceful protesters in New York, my neighboring city of Portland, and all across these United States. We are taught to believe that police are here to protect and serve the community it inhabits and yet the exact opposite has taken place. My position is that our elected officials should take the policy proposal of defunding the police seriously, as the unrest and pain among communities of color have reached a breaking point. The status quo is not working for communities of color. I am not a pawn to be used in political theatrics. In addition to defunding the police, a way to end this grotesque level of injustice is to challenge the status quo, in the streets, by making it clear, to both political parties, that there is also a need for legalizing marijuana, dismantling for-profit prisons, ending the war on drugs, ending qualified immunity, and ending cash bail. Enough is enough

It is not at all a surprise for me to see a crisis like this unfold in broad daylight when the United States continues to spend more money on weapons of war and in defense than on our own citizenry, ignoring the increase in racial injustice. For example, according to the Office of Management and Budget, in 2019, “61%, $727 billion” has been directed towards military equipment and personnel whereas housing, education, and others range between “1–7%.” This was not only the Trump administration. Under the Obama Administration, police departments all over this country were heavily militarized to how we see them today (Kershner, 2016). The problem has only been exacerbated.

The militarization of the police reflects a larger pattern: an authoritarian toolbox meant to suppress and control the masses.

As of more recently, the Trump administration dispatched federal agents in unidentifiable gear and vehicles to Portland, Oregon in order to stoke terror among those peacefully protesting. These federal agents have kidnapped, gassed, beaten, flash banged, and fired upon civilians in the area. These tactics have no place on the streets of any city in America and Trump’s federal goons have no place in Portland. All of us are in the middle of witnessing fascism reveal itself while our elected leaders sit on their hands.

Protests have erupted all over this nation even during a pandemic. Instead of protesters being met with meaningful policies aimed at helping communities of color, they are met with photo ops and violence. For example, on May 31, 2020, Portland Police kneeled with protesters outside the Justice Center. Only hours later, Portland Police violently assaulted those same protesters. Who is police terrorism serving? Who is it protecting? It benefits themselves and the oligarchs puppeteering our government. The job of a police officer is not to make sure that they themselves get home safely. Their job is to ensure the safety of every American and they have failed numerous times. Every single protest began peacefully until police intervened. It is absolutely disgraceful.

Call it out for what it is: Police Terrorism

My critics will tell you that there are a few bad apples out there creating hostility between Americans. Where the hell are all of the good cops in every police encounter video? Nowhere to be seen. The reason why is because there are none, and if there are, all of them are a bunch of cowards refusing to resign or make a meaningful change inside their departments. Not to mention the term “looters” was said all throughout the media. “Looters” is a code word intended to dehumanize the “other” and cause a distraction. What about the looters in Congress who gave away $5 trillion to the richest individuals in the country. Meanwhile, unemployment rises, racial tensions escalate, and people lose access to healthcare. The rest of Americans are left with crumbs. The United States' “democracy” is under borrowed time.

It is imperative for our elected officials to meet the moment now more than ever before. If 2020 has shown us anything, do not hold your breath waiting for politicians to act. It is essential that we the people continue to take action all across these United States and force our elected officials to meet our demands. That means taking it to the streets, voting booths, and running for public office. Nevertheless, I have hope for the future and so should you. Black Lives Matter.

Know their names: Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Philando Castille, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Walter Scott, Alton Sterling, and many many more…

*08/23/2020 UPDATE: Jacob Blake, an unarmed black man, was shot SEVEN times in the back in Kenosha, Wisconsin. I am done with this bullshit. I now support a complete abolition of police in America.
