There are automatic, power infused versions of these tools that can help with the mason’s work, but the simple tools are just easy to handle.
- Trowels: It is a steel plate attached to a bull float handle. Troweling produces a hard, smooth, dense surface and should be done immediately after floating. Troweling can be done by machine or by hand. If done by hand, the finisher will float and trowel and area before moving his kneeboards. The steel plate basically helps in making the surface smooth and does not rust easily with regular use. You should have variety of trowels that help in working on various setting of cement work.
- Edger: This tool has an L-shaped edge on one side to break the concrete edge away from the form boards. It also has a tapered edge to give the edge of the concrete a professional finish. The concrete edger is used just as the concrete is begins to stiffen. Laying it against the edge of the form and dragging it across the concrete helps perform the task of smoothing the surface perfectly.
- Groovers: While laying down cement and concrete there are chances of development of cracks upon drying. The groovers are tools made just to prevent the cracks from appearing. Groovers are usually made of bronze or stainless steel and have a V-shaped bit that cuts the groove. Like edgers, they come with wood or comfort-grip handles. The most common groover size is 6 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide.
- Portable cement mixer: One of the most essential component of cement works, portable cement mixer helps in uniformly mixing the cement with water so that no lumps are left in the mixture at the time of application.
- Pressure washer: A pressures washer is primarily used in resurfacing the old slab that had chipped off from a few places. Pressure washing gets rid of oil and debris and washes away the top layer of concrete so that the new product will bond to the old surface.
