Well, it really depends on what you want out of your publishing career. Let me go over some things and try and make it all a little clearer. I have been an indie author for coming up to ten years. I have seen the indie world come and grow and change. I have a lot of experience in it.

I will hold my hands up and say my only experience with traditional publishing is through a couple of friends who had their books traditionally published.

Indie publishing stands for independent publishing. A lot like self-publishing, but not quite. …

Has the world gone mad with it all?

It seems that every day there is a new do or don’t rule. You can’t say such and such because it will offend someone else, you can’t do this, or someone will be upset about it. We live in a world where it appears we really can commit thought crime, ie, what I think about something, in someone else’s eyes would be deemed terrible and should have me strung up and brought to the stocks.

Cancel Culture

Take cancel culture. I’d heard this term tossed around but had no idea what it meant. This…

When family doesn’t always support you.

If anyone asks me what I do for a living, they get one of two answers. I either tell them I edit books for a living, which is a lie but also true. I am a writer, so I edit my work before sending it to an actual editor. And the second answer is, I tell them I work as a delivery courier with my wife. Also true. We had to take on something, or she did when her business got wiped out by Covid and lockdowns. She has a wedding business. …

You can write and you can publish.

When people find out I am a published author, the first thing they tell me is they’d love to write a book one day. The problem is, they don’t know how to do it.

In some respects, it’s almost like they’re expecting a magic answer. Most of the time I’ll say, well I sit and write, which is true. I sit and write pretty much all the time, and I enjoy it, but those who ask don’t like that answer. …

It’s that time of year again where it starts to feel like we have a new fresh start coming up. I love the New Year, and I am all in favour of people making New Year’s resolutions. People might not stick to them and 80% per cent of New Year’s resolutions are broken within a few days, but that’s fine.

The beautiful thing about New Year’s resolution is that you’re saying to yourself, something needs to change, or I want something else for myself. You may give it up after a few days, you may find that new habit you…

Depression is a smart thing. It sneaks up on you in ways you don’t know

At least I’m showering. That’s what I keep telling myself. I have OCD to thank for that. Sometimes I wish OCD would get lost so I could skip the shower part. Just one day to be able to go to bed without all the bother of it, but I know if I even tried, I’d be getting out of bed in the middle of the night not just to shower, but changing the bedding, cleaning the bed and god knows what else OCD would be demanding. It would be more effort than the shower itself.

Is It the Depression, or is it Me?

I’m trying to figure out…

Why you should write a series

When I say series, I am talking a series of books containing individual stories that all tie into one, but each book is a complete story on its own. Nothing drives me crazier than authors breaking one book down into several installments and calling it a series. That is NOT a series. That is a serial.

A series is Harry Potter, or The Hunger Games, or Me Before You.

Each book in those series has their own beginning middle and end. They have their own story. You can see the character start with the…

Maybe the universe is trying to tell me something. Perhaps I’m not meant to be a writer after all.

These are things I’ve said to my wife in the past week or variations of them. It seems that whenever I get a good run with my writing, something comes along and takes my writing time away and makes it virtually impossible to get time to get the words down.

It makes me understand why perfectly good swimmers drown because that’s how I feel. I’m treading water, but the water is getting rougher, and I’m getting tired of trying to swim…

There are some writers out there who just seem to churn word after word out. They can sit down and, in an hour, have produced 3,000 words. And it’s hard for those who struggle to even get 300 words in that time, let alone 3,000 words. I get it. I used to be like that. Trying to get down every perfect word. Trying to make myself sound coherent. I’d edit, and tweak; I’d go back and re-read. I’d immerse myself in my piece until it got to the point where anything I wrote, sounded terrible.

But then I learnt to…

What it takes to make it as a full-time working writer.

I’m not at the top of my game, and I don’t claim to be anywhere close. In fact, I’m probably so far down the list, I can’t see the peak, but doesn’t that mean I haven’t made it as a writer.

I sold my university texts books yesterday. It might seem, like nothing, but in truth, it was a monumental moment in my life because what it was saying was, I’m not going back.

I graduated from university five years ago with a degree in Neuropsychology. I then went…
