Have had similarly positive experience with Amen’s clinics, in this case the one in WA State. After several unsuccessful attempts with “marriage counselors”, each with their own philosophy and approach, we finally tried a psychiatrist who also did couples counseling. And after our initial intake interview, he recommended we both take some ‘tests’, which later pointed to the possibility of a behavioral ‘disorder’ in my (now) ex. Possibilities were mentioned like Chronic Depression, BiPolar, BPD and NPD, but her symptoms didn’t seem to fall into any clear category.
So having read several of Amen’s books, where he mentions the impact of mental health on relationship difficulties, as sort of a ‘last ditch’ effort, we finally had our PET scans done at the nearest Amen clinic. And comparing our respective brain scans with “normal” ones was remarkable, with my own scan looking apparently ‘typical’ with some active and inactive areas, while my wife’s scan taken at rest, was all lit up like a Christmas tree! Which also fit my experience of her as an individual who often seemed to have great difficulty managing her internal dialogue and emotions… and the behaviors that went with it.
Although unfortunately we eventually split up when it became apparent that nuthin’ was gonna change, because she simply refused to discuss it, let alone attempt any forms of treatment, even despite the ‘graphic’ proof. But nonetheless those scans still helped us both achieve some sorta definitive ‘closure’.
