The trend seems to be more toward everything getting cheaper, if not free as automation and the cost of mass production keep driving prices down. BTW, wasn’t Star Trek set in a future universe where ‘economics’ no longer really matters?

But practically-speaking, I think you’re right, it seems to be human nature to not value anything “free”.
