Phil isn’t the coach, he’s the GM — he gets credit for the amount of talent and star power he finds, not for how much the talent overachieves. The coach and the players get credit for that.

Carmelo has had his reputation tarnished by this situation ever since he forced the trade from Denver, and a substantial fraction of people have commented on KP’s diva-ish blackout, but the onus is primarily on Phil’s failures of management, and correctly so. Regardless, if you think he’s a bad GM, you have no reason to want him to continue driving this trainwreck.
