When the dream becomes a nightmare

The young boy looked up and saw a small circle of light. His head was aching. He reached up and felt warm moisture on his hand. He tried to see what it was, but it was too dark. He didn’t need sight to know what it was. He tried to stand up and suddenly felt his legs wobble and fell flat on his forearms. The gritty sand and rocks scraped him, he took a deep breath then felt himself give into the sorrow of the moment. He cried out “Why?!!”…..the darkness was piercing, the betrayal was fresh, the pain was real! Not only physically, but emotionally and mentally too! How did this happen? How did he end up in this dark place? He knew how, but certainly didn’t understand why. He hoped it was just a bad dream. His nickname was the dreamer, now he wished this was only a nightmare that he would eventually wake up from. He knew deep down it wasn’t. He knew that the moisture he felt was dark crimson. He knew that his life would never be the same. It’s hard to be positive when you are deep in a hole, in darkness. Little did he know that this detour; this unexpected, unwanted deviation would become his defining moment. This detour, which he didn’t see coming. This detour, which was so far from the destination that he saw so clear in his dreams, was just as important to the fulfillment of his dreams. Unexpectedly, in a moment, this detour became his new destination. He stayed on the ground, allowing himself to lay flat on his battered body. He closed his eyes and silently told himself that he would dream again.
