Well said. Being safe in the hills is more about knowing your own capabilities rather than ticking boxes.

I’ve had many days where I’ve not bothered taking a map and compass, because I know I don’t need them. I would never dream of doing that on a hill I’ve never walked before. But one where I’m confident, I’ve walked many, many times. I know the terrain. I know the route I’m taking and any other possible routes I could decide to take while on the hill. Why would I take something I’m never going to need?
