I think it goes without saying, that being a good leader is not easy. Even when things go bad, it’s leader who everyone’s going to look up to, so it’s very important to gain some qualities that will shine through even the darkest times.

Decisiveness

Making up one’s mind can be tough. But it’s one of the qualities that distinguish great leaders from others: they don’t hesitate, they act. And their decisions are not impulsive and irrational. Good leaders don’t back out on their decisions, showing commitment to what they say.

Lucidity

It seems that not a lot of people are sure what they are doing with their life and what they are doing with it; and because of that, they tend to be attracted to those who have a clear plan in mind. And this clarity gives people opportunity to decide whether they want to follow that particular leader and realize their vision.

Humility

Some might say that being humble is an opposite to being confident. But I think one complements another. Good leaders can admit they were wrong and take useful criticism as an opportunity for growth. Be grateful to be who you are, and let others see it.

Courage

We all fear something. That’s just human nature, it’s our instincts and we can’t escape it. But what sets great leader apart is ability to project fearlessness — people need to think that he or she is not afraid of hardships and what’s coming.

Passion

If you see that a leader does not really care about what he or she is doing, it will surely drive you away from them. So being passionate about what you do, to truly care — that’s another essential quality of great leader. Passion is contagious, and will attract other people to what you’re doing.
