Hygge pronounced Hue-ga is a word adopted from the Danish. It describes a feeling or a moment when everything feels warm, cosy and together. Imagine a time when you felt truly happy, honest and present in the world.

Perhaps it was the simplest moment. You were just relaxing with a coffee and for one fleeting second a thought passed your mind- this is blissful, serene, enjoyable- that’s Hygge. Chances are you’ve experienced Hygge without ever knowing it but, now autumn and winter are upon us we could all do with a bit more of it in our lives.

Create the feeling of Hygge.

In Danish, ‘Hygge’ is an obsession and way of life. That’s why you will find Hygge added to other words to connote enjoyment. Hyggebuksers for example are a pair of jogging bottoms that are comfortable whilst Hyggekrog is a serene spot in the home to relax.

Hygge is a gentle reminder not to sweat the small stuff, instead take moments to relax and enjoy. The home is no exception to Hygge. Instead, view it as an expansion of your feelings, it reflects personality, taste and pleasures and should look relaxing. If our environment feels bleak, bare and uncomfortable this can make us feel unsettled.

For the optimum Hygge experience use neutral colours or calming pastels to relax with. Whatever your colour palette ensure that everything matches.Use the rule of 3 with any hanging pictures or cushions. Chunky and well woven blankets will be so inviting this autumn, whilst candles will gently warm the soul. Thick and luxurious rugs will look and feel sumptuous and will make a perfect addition to the look.

Hygge as a feeling

Hygge appeals to all our senses, Smell, Taste,Touch,Sound and Sight. When all these sensory receptors are receiving happy and positive stimuli we feel good. When the autumn chill hits us our senses can take a bit of a battering. At this time, more than ever the home can be a cosy retreat and the best way to get our Hygge on.

Who doesn’t love to sit with a cup of warm cocoa on a thick, plush rug in front of a fire whilst watching netflix on the tv?
