Talk CIA, or wait before talking

Interacting with others, confronting ideas is very exciting. But let’s face it, as soon as topic is not simple, it may not be easy to understand each other.

Indeed, even on a single topic there are many perspectives, angles, or meta-levels to address it.

How to make sure to stay aligned?

There’s one methodology that I have learnt some years ago, and I find it really effective to have productive conversation. It’s called CIA:

  • Context: giving background
  • Issue: explaining the specific issue
  • Action: the proposed pragmatic action to mitigate or fix the issue

This 3-step approach has proven very useful for me in the past.

As long as I have not strategized a thought with such methodology, I tend to stay silent. Speaking too early could ruin the impact.

Wise people listen, a lot.
