With over 1.1M members and a strong sense of mission and purpose, BECU is the largest community-based credit union in the country.
I’m pleased to share today that I’ve joined the BECU Board of Directors. I’m honored to be part of such an inspiring group of BECU Board members and more than 2,000 employees — all with a singular vision to ensure that all BECU members and their communities prosper. It’s truly a unique organization that is deeply mission driven yet also has the scale and size to make a meaningful impact.
For those of you not familiar with BECU (especially outside of Seattle), it is the 4th largest credit union in the country with over $18 billion in assets. Last year BECU produced over $200M in net income and, as a credit union, returned $300M to members in the form of better rates and lower fees compared to the average bank. One of the many things that BECU does for its members is proactively give better interest rates to members who have improved their credit. Because of initiatives like this, BECU currently has an NPS score of 75.
BECU was originally founded in 1935 by 18 Boeing employees and has grown to be a household name in the Pacific Northwest. I’m especially inspired by what the current BECU leadership under the helm of the CEO, Benson Porter, has done over the last 6.5 years. They’ve grown the number of members from 580k in 2008 to now over 1.1M members — all while putting members first and prioritizing quality above all else. While today’s membership of 1.1M members is quite an accomplishment, I know this is just the beginning and I’m excited to support BECU as they continue to grow. I’m also eager to contribute where I have some area of expertise, including the rapid digitization of financial services. This is area that BECU is already excelling and I’m excited to advise BECU as it looks towards the future.
As anyone that knows me can attest, I’m motivated by mission-driven organizations. That’s why — when choosing a Board that I could serve on in addition to Remitly — I chose BECU (and thankfully they chose me). There are very few organizations like BECU that balance a deep sense purpose, member/customer centricity, and enough scale to make a real impact. I’m absolutely thrilled and honored to be part of this group.
