Will You Be Watching March Madness When You Should Be Working?
This Thursday and Friday, U.S. companies will lose around $1.7 billion from employees whose attention won’t be on their work. Why?
My first memory of brackets and basketball during the work/school day was in the early 80s when my dad’s Air Force squadron collected entry fees for picking games played by teams that no one had actually watched during the regular season.
I’m fairly sure that national security was not jeopardized as the tournament got started. But I know that I skipped class in college and made sure that my schedule was free early in my work career so I could watch the games. And, more importantly, to ensure that my $5 investment in whatever bracket pool I had joined remained intact.
Think about that. Instead of spending my time doing things that are worth $25, $50, $100, $500 per hour, you and me and plenty of other people will use that time and invest emotional energy in a guessing game where I may not even break even.
On one level, March Madness really isn’t that big of a deal. Most companies don’t crack down on employees, citing benefits to morale that may produce higher levels of productivity later on.
But on a more significant level, it’s another illustration of a massive problem that I see in my work as a performance coach.
You don’t know how to get it all done.
You want to work hard but you want to make time for your family. You want to work hard but you also want to have fun.
I get it. I feel the same way.
