Good question! For that sort of case, I’d spend time thinking through the problems we’re solving for, get those well documented, get any other examples of how this is done, and put it in a single Trello card to the right (wherever you think it makes sense in terms of priority).

The goal is to get design about 2–3 weeks ahead of engineering at any given point in time. Once you get to that sort of distance, you’ve bought yourself some time to have a designer go deep on an exploration of something innovative.

No matter what, for something that big, we’ll still involve customers in the process once we have some mockups made. And then, if we’re getting positive feedback, as we start to iterate on the design, we’ll find ways to break it down into micro-sprints and the prioritize those against the other things on deck.
