I’ve come to think of John McCain as being one of the only Republicans in Washington who is not afraid to speak the truth when it comes to the abhorrent conduct and disgraceful presidency of Donald Trump.
It just goes to show that a man dying of a brain tumor can still see more clearly than Trump’s supporters what #45 is.
McCain had my respect when he started the campaign trail in 2007. He lost it when he won the RNC nomination by claiming to be born-again to gain the evangelical right’s vote, accepted Sarah Palin as his VP, and stirring up hateful rhetoric later during the general election to polarize the voting base. The last was not nearly as vile as what when on in this last election, but it was there.
Since going back to being a Senator, he’s displayed his more moderate roots and has earned some of my respect back as a Trump opponent. But that is where it ends. He is still for repealing ACA rather than fix it and though visibly concerned about the nuclear option the GOP used to get Gorsuch passed as the most recent SCOTUS judge he voted along his party lines.
It was a shame he got paired with Palin and embraced the proto-te party shenanigans because he could’ve had my vote just by being who he originally was. But the RNC nomination means you have to tow their line and it corrupted his campaign. It forever, stained him for me and ruined an otherwise great legacy. If he never had the RNC nomination by holding true to he own values rather than party dogma, he would’ve my favorite Republican.
His recent rambling in Sessions’ hearing was disturbing and dsaddening. However, I still respect is overall service and wish him well. But is foe me a, stained hero, and should’ve retired from politics long ago.
