If you haven’t heard of Scoop, it’s a carpooling app that allows you to give rides to people along your route to work. The app matches you with people who best fit your route, so you get to work on time.
It’s a great little app if you want to make extra cash without having to feel like an Uber driver.
Here is a quick video to explain how it works:
City Sponsored Driver Bonus and Reimbursements
Depending on your city and route, you can make anywhere between $6 to $8 per rider per trip. Some cities will have special bonuses for drivers and will give you extra cash. At the time of this writing, San Mateo has granted a bonus for drivers who work in the cities of San Mateo. See image below:
Reimbursements are also easy. With one tap, your reimbursements will be deposited within 3–5 business days. All Scoop requires is your account number and routing number to transfer any funds via direct deposit. You’ll then receive a text confirming transfer.
What If I don’t get matched on my route?
If you don’t get matched with someone on your route, don’t worry. Scoop has an awesome program to reward drivers that frequently use the app with their Commute Hero Program. In the case that you don’t get matched with someone, Scoop will reimburse you the amount you normally get paid to give a ride by the end of the week.

Other cities will have different incentives. If you live near any of these cities below, be sure to check if your city has a “city sponsored bonus” for drivers:

Will I be taxed?
The best thing about driving for Scoop is that it’s nontaxable.
Here is what Scoop has to say via their website:
“Scoop does not carry the same risk of voiding auto insurance as traditional ridesharing companies. The simple explanation is that drivers of traditional rideshare companies profit from their trips which can void auto insurance. Scoop drivers get a reimbursement of a portion of the cost of their commute, which the IRS does not consider income as long as it comes in under the stated limit (~$0.535 per mile). Therefore, carpooling with Scoop is legally treated the same way carpooling would be with no app, which does not void traditional auto insurance.“
If you’re also on a work/student visa and are worried about being taxed, here is another excerpt from their website:
“In addition to earnings being nontaxable, Scoop is completely LEGAL for holders with visa’s to commute using Scoop, both as a Rider + Driver since the IRS does not consider this as income as it’s under the stated limit (~$0.535 per mile).”
Scoop has come a long way over the last two years and has been opening more routes in the Bay Area. Aside from making some extra cash, there are other great benefits to carpooling with Scoop. Check out my article here.
