We used to…

A Reflection Poem of Possibility

THE SEA

Our relationship was built in a sea of our deepest emotions.

“We used to.”

Every day, we would dive deeper and deeper into the waves of commitment and waters of our words.

“We used to.”

But I was slowly drowning with empty promises and broken regret.

“We used to.”

but, we tried. Oh, we tried so hard.

“We used to.”

But, you allowed yourself to float, while I drowned in the promises of our hopeful future together.

“We used to.”

You showered me with your words of truth, and made me believe that I actually was worth something just a bit more to you than the people on the shore. The people who never believed in anything you ever did.

“We used to.”

As I fall into the deep pit of depression and heartache, I can still hear you echo: “We used to.”

Our relationship became a “We used to.”

I tried to make you happy and make the choice to love every day. But, a person can only feel so much. What’s worth feeling an emotion for someone if it isn’t reciprocated to some degree?

I felt like I needed to blame myself for everything that was wrong with us. Late at night, I still wonder if you think about me too.

“We used to.”
THE CLIMB

But, that is not who I am anymore.

“We used to.”

Now, I know that I don’t need a romance to feel complete. I have family, friends, and God to help me feel complete again.

“We used to.”

I thank you for showing me the realness of a relationship, that it will not always be easy, but everything can teach you a lesson with enough time. You taught me the greatest lesson of all. People can rise from the pitfall.

“We used to.”

You tried to shatter me, but you failed. Now, I can love the world rather than just the sea.
