How do you know if your company is ready for EDI? There are many contributing factors which indicate whether or not your company is ready for EDI, but here are the first 3 which come to mind.

  1. Customers Require it

The biggest and most obvious way to tell if you’re ready for EDI is if in order to attract new customers, they require it. Sometimes it is better to be a little fish in the ocean than it is to be a big fish in a little pond. If your company is doing business with customers that are big enough to sustain their own EDI, then it is very likely that your company is also ready.

To give an example, let’s say that you’re selling auto parts to the big three in the U.S., (Ford, GM, Stellantis). These customers already have EDI in place and they are using it to streamline their business process. Your company might be roughly the same size and put out a slightly higher quality component than your competitor, but if you want to win future contracts, then you have to fit into their operations like a well-lubed cog in a machine. If you cause them more paperwork, then you are causing them more headaches.
