I’m for housing that people can afford the challenge is getting someone to pay for it. today they do it by requiring that a % of units be set aside as affordable when a development is over 6 (i think) units. This is creating a lot of new restricted, permanent affordable housing that is mixed income and works against the problem of poverty density. I don’t know how we can increase affordable housing when it is not income restricted because the demand is just too high. I don’t think anyone wants to go back to the 50’s / 60’s approach of building income restricted projects.

As for a corporate mega-city, Boston has actually done a great job of preserving neighborhoods through zoning of high rises, without this we would have lost the back bay and beacon hill much like we did the west end. Even look at Cambridge who has focused all their new, high rise development in Kendal Sq. creating one of the nations hot-beds of new startups, new jobs and opportunity to keep the intellectual capital that Boston is famous for producing in Boston.
