The music video, “Like a Boy” by Ciara is a women empowering song and video which attempts to give women confidence to believe that they can do all the same things men can do. She talks about this in the context of relationships initially, saying that men tend to play with women’s feelings and put in less effort than them overall. She also talks about how men are known to make more money and show it off and speaks to all girls when she motivates them to go out and do the same. She says she wishes roles would be switched so that everyone can see the potential women have to do the same and so men can get a taste of their own medicine in a sense. She also makes note that men tend to act differently around their friends than they do with their female companion. Although I may not agree with everything she says in this song, I do think that this is the right direction that women need to go to be respected in society. I think she may be going about it differently than she should and calling out men through stereotyping is not going to make people sympathize but I do see the point she is trying to make. I agree that putting themselves out there will give them more opportunities and allow them to prove their worth, but I think they should come up with ways to do it in a different manner so that men are willing to give them those opportunities to perform. Finally, at the end of the song the artist switches roles and says that she wants men to see what it is like to cry and be upset over something that a girl has done to them. I feel like many times men do have to deal with women for reasons that are not their fault so once again, I like the direction she is going in but not the manner in which she presents her argument.
