Good Intent

You may have seen or heard about Simon Sinek’s great TED talk on starting with ‘why’ before moving onto the ‘how’ and ‘what’. For this post I want to briefly focus on the ‘why’. I’m always intrigued and interested by what someone’s true intent is when I hear of what new activities they are carrying out. I have found two quotes that can help to provide more insight into the world of intent:

  1. ‘We are swimming in an ocean of intent.’
  2. ‘Intention is one of the most powerful forces there is. What you mean when you do a thing will always determine the outcome.” -Brenna Yovanoff

I find both of these interesting as I don’t feel intent is something that is often talked about or even thought about amongst people in everyday conversation. Despite this I do feel that it can be a powerful force when combined with will.

After reading up on both, I wrote this to better help me understand the workings of intent and will:

intent + will (energy) outcomes

What I find interesting is the difference between someone who has a natural intent to do something vs. a more planned attempt to do something. Can both result in desired outcomes through good intent? Or perhaps the outcome is always something different to what was originally planned.

This would read something like this:

good intent + will (energy) unplanned outcomes

Perhaps, although the outcomes may be different to what were originally planned, if we regularly practise good intent then better avenues will be created? Will our experiences be better if we strive to do good rather than bad? How mindful of our actions and intentions can we truly be?

To finish this post, I want to say that I hope we can all be more mindful of what our true intentions are, be true to ourselves at the same time and develop clearer expectations about what we really want out of this life. Over the next few weeks my aim will be to practise being more focused with my intentions in order to do more good.
