Michael Munger on Slavery and Racism
Russ Roberts

I’m curious about where Mike is getting the idea that the children of Roman slaves were not slaves from birth. Literally every source I’ve consulted says the opposite. Here are two:

“the offspring of slaves as a child born to a slave mother (vernae) automatically became a slave irrespective of who the father was.” http://www.ancient.eu/article/629/

“Under Roman law, the offspring of slave women assumed the status of their mothers, except when the mother had been free and married at the time of conception or, since the second century AD, if she had in fact been free at any moment during pregnancy.” https://www.princeton.edu/~pswpc/pdfs/scheidel/050704.pdf
