Against “Don’t Read the Comments”

Always read the comments, you’ll never know what the “other side” is saying or thinking if you don’t. I often read the comments on right-wing red sites, then do a bit more research to find out the actual facts on what their talking about. Then, when this comes up in conversations with my more conservative work mates, I can deconstruct their conspiracy theory.

For example, much hand-wringing about the UN Small Arms Treaty, many people are freaking out because it uses the word “State” in it. They (and the writers, bloggers, etc) don’t realize that this word, when in this UN document, is NOT referring to states inside the US. Also it specifically says internal arms trade is regulated by internal laws and this is only dealing with international arms trading. I live in Oklahoma, and this was a topic of conversation.
