Our effects on climate go back further than 1950. The Alps glaciers started retreating in 1850 due to increased sunlight absorption from soot coming out of Industrial Revolutionary factories. That same soot affected rainfall patterns in northern Africa, the Middle East, and India from then on.

It took us over 100 years to even realize this, and even now we are just starting to realize just how long our industrial activities have been modifying global climate.
